Fencing panel and posts are not as simple to construct as you would think. In order to ensure you have your panels constructed correctly you should follow a number of steps which are connected with the ground upon which your fence is being constructed
To Build A Fence On Soil Or Soft Ground.
1. The foremost thing you need to ensure is that the area where your fence is being constructed is clear. Remove any existing or old fencing and then cut out any garden plants that you do not want to keep. Any plants you wish to keep will need to either be screened or moved to a new plot.
2. Where you want the initial post to be located, dig a 0.75m deep hole of sufficient width to allow cement to be added liberally. Getting the initial hole in the correct position is crtical in ensuring the remaining posts are correctly situated. Place the post shoe or post (if there is no shoe) in the foot of the hole. Using a tape measure and spirit level ensure the post is vertical on all sides and partially fill the hole with rubble. You may have to construct a number of props to bear the posts in position until the cement has set. Once you are certain that the post is in its correct location, mix a concrete mix and fill the hole with the mix. Ram down tighly the concrete with a piece of wood to ensure it gets all the way to the bottom of the hole and leave it to harden.
3. Once the concrete for the first post has gone off you can then start to determine the location of the remaining posts. Once you have ascertained the posts are in location, follow the concrete pouring step in step 2 above. It will be worth having at least one persons help you position the posts as you need at least two pairs of hands. Tip: you may find it easier to position the fencing panel against the first post and using this as a distance guide for the next post.
4. Once the concrete in all the posts has set, you can begin sliding the fencing panels into position. Make sure there is clearance between the soil and the panel; this will reduce the likelihood of any wood rot. Fit any clips you have to the fencing panels and posts.
How to Erect A Fence On Concrete Or Hard Ground
1. The foremost you need to ensure is that the area where your fence is being constructed is clear. Disregard any existing or old fencing and then clear any garden plants that you do not want to keep.
2. Using chalk, measure and mark out where your fence post bolts will be positioned. Get a friend to aid you with this as it can be tricky with just one pair of hands.
3. Using an electric drill, drill holes in the concrete where your bolts will be located.
4. Place the bolts through the post shoes and fix to the ground with a spanner after fitting a wall plug in the hole.
5. Locate the fence posts in the post shoes and attach the primary fence panel to the first post with the help of fence clips. Attach the fence post to the fence panel ensuring there is a clear gap between the fence panel and the ground; this will prevent wood rot.
6. Follow steps 1-5 above for the remainder of the fencing panels.
